The “Yamahome Tanemaki GyorYo-sai” (Mountain Praising Seed Sowing and Fishing Hunting Festival), a designated intangible cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture, is held every year on April 15.

This festival is held in connection with the legend that when Empress Jingu was staying at Toyoura, Tsushima, on her way to the Three Han expeditions, a fisherman from Shiga presented her with seafood and mountain products.

“Yamahome” is a Shinto ritual in which the people of the sea praise the mountains, and it is a festival to pray for a bountiful harvest and to give thanks for the blessings and harvest of the year in the autumn of plenty. This festival is important not only for expressing gratitude to the sea and the mountains, but also as a place where many people gather and deepen community ties.
