In the Kaneshaki, Kōminato, and Oshima districts, a traditional event called “Shishijuka” is held every year on April 4th. This is to celebrate those who have turned forty-four years old for men and thirty-five years old for women, signifying that they have completed their major misfortune year.
First, after offering prayers at Orihata Shrine and raising a toast, they parade through the town. Along the way, they throw mochi rice cakes and serve sake to the onlookers, allowing everyone to enjoy the festival in a lively atmosphere.
On this day only, people who live away from their hometown also return to participate in the event. And in the evening, a grand banquet is held, inviting local people.
This traditional event is extremely important to the people of Kaneshaki, Kōminato, and the Oshima districts.
