The former Kurauchi Residence is the main family home of three generations of the Kurauchi family, who managed coal mines mainly in the Chikuhou region of Fukuoka Prefecture.
Around 1906, the main building, reception hall, and garden were built. In 1916, additions were made from the treasure house, and a Japanese-style room, kitchen, grand hall, tea room, grand entrance, and other structures were greatly expanded facing the pond garden. The adjacent Kibune Shrine and its torii gate, approach, and stone bridge were also built as one unit, harmonizing the buildings and the garden within the rural landscape.
This residence attracted attention at the time as a luxurious dwelling of a coal mining magnate, and it still retains its original condition.
It is a must-see attraction for learning about the history of the Chikuhou region.
