At “Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,” a ritual called “Kyokusui no En” is held every year on the first Sunday of March.

This ritual recreates a court event from the Heian period, where cups are floated on a man-made stream in the Kyokusui Garden. Participants must compose a poem before the cup flows past them and then drink the sake from the cup.

This ritual is said to have begun in 958 and is one of the Shinto ceremonies commemorating Sugawara no Michizane.

This ritual held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is loved by many worshippers.
