Japan’s Greatest Enthusiasm Cultivated by 420 Years of History

The “Sendai Great Tug-of-War,” held annually on the day before the Autumnal Equinox in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The sight of 3,000 men pulling Japan’s largest rope, measuring 365m in length and weighing 7 tons, is truly a spectacle. In March 2024, it was also designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and its historical value is highly regarded.
