The Hamayumi Festival is a traditional festival held at the Shioji Shrine in Nagasu Town. It has a history of over 850 years and is said to have begun in the Azuchi-Momoyama period.

The word “bakai” in the festival’s name means “scramble” or “compete” in the local dialect. At the festival, men throw a target made of straw and hemp and fiercely compete for it.

This scramble is filled with the vigor of the strong men and excites the viewers. In addition, the procession that continues from the shrine grounds through the town towards the Ariake Sea is powerful and worth seeing.

The Hamayumi Festival is a festival based on ancient traditions and is beloved by many as one of Nagasu Town’s historical and cultural heritages.
