The “Ueno Ware Autumn Kiln Opening,” held every autumn in Fukuchi Town, Fukuoka Prefecture. This is a must-see event for pottery fans, where Ueno ware kilns with a history of 400 years gather to exhibit and sell new and exquisite pieces.

What is Ueno Ware?

It is said that Ueno ware began when the potter Sonkai, who was brought back during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea, opened a kiln in Ueno, Buzen Province, when Tadaoki Hosokawa entered Kokura Castle.

During the Edo period, it was highly praised by the tea master Enshu Kobori, and it was loved by tea masters to the point that it was counted as one of the Enshu Seven Kilns. It is characterized by its thinness, lightness, and warm texture. Refinement can be felt in its simple beauty that makes the most of the flavor of the earth.
