Asaki Shrine, located in Onga Town, Onga District, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a historic shrine known as a place associated with Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. It has attracted the faith of local people since ancient times and is still carefully protected today.

History of Asaki Shrine

It is said that its founding began when Emperor Saimei, the 37th Emperor, descended to Tsukushi and built a shrine building at this place. Later, Yoshimitsu Ashikaga prayed for military prowess when descending to Tsukushi, and after returning in triumph, he ordered the Ouchi clan to rebuild the shrine buildings. However, the shrine buildings and sacred treasures were destroyed by fire due to the war with the Otomo clan in Bungo (present-day Oita Prefecture).

The current shrine buildings were rebuilt during the Edo period, and the main hall has a rare thatched roof.
