New Year’s events are held at Atago Shrine in Fukuoka City, one of the three major Atago shrines in Japan.
Especially during the “Gantan-sai” (New Year’s Day Festival) on January 1st, the Shinto priest reads out New Year’s congratulatory prayers in the main hall, and shrine maidens dedicate the celebratory “Toyosakae no Mai” dance.
Along with the first visit to the shrine in the New Year, it is possible to enjoy the shrine’s first sunrise of the year, so approximately 500,000 people visit every year, forming a “long line for good luck” and bustling with many people seeking good fortune and success.
