There is a wonderful wisteria at Jozenji Temple, known as “Fuji-dera” (Wisteria Temple). This wisteria covers the garden with a single trunk, and its age is over 500 years.
Every year during Golden Week, you can see the wisteria blossoms blooming all over with purple flower clusters called “Geigo no Fuji” (Welcoming Wisteria), which attracts many flower viewers. It was even designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka Prefecture in 1962.
Also, on April 29, the “Wisteria Festival” is held, where shakuhachi (bamboo flute) performances are dedicated, and many people visit. This “Jozenji no Fuji” (Wisteria of Jozenji) is familiar as a symbol of Fukuchi Town and has been loved since the coal mining era.
By all means, visit Jozenji Temple to see this wisteria and feel the beautiful Japanese tradition.
