Nakayama Kumano Shrine has a wisteria called “Nakayama Large Wisteria,” which boasts a history of over 300 years. It is said that “Man-san,” who ran a sake shop in the area during the Edo period, brought back wisteria seeds from Noda in Osaka and planted them.
The Nakayama Large Wisteria is designated as a natural monument of the prefecture, and it emits a sweet fragrance and blooms beautifully in spring. Also, the wisteria arch over the shrine’s stone bridge is lit up at night, creating a romantic atmosphere.
From mid to late April, the “Nakayama Large Wisteria Festival” is held, where you can enjoy jazz live performances, photo contests, and sales of agricultural products and local specialties. Tables and chairs are arranged under the wisteria trellis, where you can leisurely view the wisteria blossoms.
