When you think of a summer tradition that makes you feel cool, it’s furin (wind chimes). The sound of furin not only calms the mind but also provides a sense of coolness. There is a temple decorated with many such furin. That is Nyoirinji Temple (Frog Temple) in Ogori City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Nyoirinji Temple is a Shingon sect Omuro school temple that was founded in 729 by an imperial order of Empress Koken, and there are many frog statues on the temple grounds. Frogs are considered auspicious because they are associated with the word “kaeru” (to return). In addition, the temple’s principal image is Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, and Nyoirin means fulfilling wishes. At Nyoirinji Temple, a furin festival is held every year from June to September.
During the Furin Festival, about 5,000 furin are displayed on the temple grounds. The colorful glass and ceramic furin are beautiful to look at, and they sway in the gentle breeze, playing a refreshing sound. Some of the furin are handmade, and people who visit the temple write their wishes and messages on them. At night, they are illuminated, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
The furin festival at Nyoirinji Temple is a wonderful event that makes you forget the summer heat. With the blessings of the frogs and Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, your wishes may come true. Please be sure to visit.
